Principles and Philosophy

Horsemanship is Horsemanship! It’s not English, neither is it Western nor any other discipline in particular! All horses are born with the same innate characteristics regardless of our desires or what our chosen future is for them. I will help you create an understanding, communication, connection and trust between you and your horse like you’ve never experienced before. This will give you a foundation to succeed with your horse, wherever your passion!

NATHAN DAY HORSEMANSHIP is about helping people and horses get along better, therefore giving horses a better deal in life!
Do we know every thought of the people who we have the closest most intimate relationships with? Do they know every thought that we have? I’m guessing not!
So how can we even start to think that we know everything about a horse, especially when we have completely different survival characteristics?
What we must first do is try to understand things from the horse’s point of view and then help the horse understand us and what we are asking.

I BELIEVE THAT THESE ARE SOME OF THE IMPORTANT STEPS TO BECOMING A HORSEMAN

  1. ATTITUDE
    • The no.1 most important step! We must constantly progress our thoughts to think positive and think like a horseman having an attitude of justice.
    • “We must control our thoughts because our thoughts become our actions and our actions become our attitude”
  2. PSYCHOLOGY
    • The study of the minds, ours and the horses! Understanding mental function and behaviour will give you an important tool towards knowing what to do and when to do it!
    • To truly be able to communicate to the horse we must try to see it from the horse’s point of view.
  3. CONCEPTS & PHILOSOPHIES
    • Passed down from our mentors, a few words that have more meaning and answers than any regimented technique, bit or man made device.
  4. OPEN MINDED
    • Leave your opinions and past experiences behind and be willing to give anything a go. Who knows what new things you might learn.
  5. NON JUDGEMENTAL
    • Be willing to accept people where they are in their horsemanship journey and to learn something positive in any given situation
  6. BALANCE
    • This doesn’t just mean not falling off! Everything you do and how you go about it has a balance.
  7. EXPERIENCE
    • It takes a lifetime to live a life time, so learn from people who have experience, then add your own experiences!
  8. THE JOURNEY
    • The people and the horses we meet, the influences in our lives and the amazing path that horsemanship can take you on.

I believe that there isn't a program or a method that can fit every person and every horse in every situation but we can take all these attributes that make up horsemanship and use the experience and knowledge to work towards the desired outcome.

I hope that I can help you and your horses someday too!

Enjoy the journey
